8 Steps to Declutter Your Desk

cluttered_deskYour desk can become fairly cluttered after just a couple weeks of sitting, and working there.  Here’s five steps that you should follow if you want to clean up and declutter your desk quickly, and efficiently.

1.  Pull everything, if you can, off the desk.  If you have to leave larger items on there such as computers, or printers, that’s fine.

2.  With everything off, you can begin to clean your desk.  You should wipe down all dry surfaces, and all the corners, and little nooks and crannies.  Try and wipe off everything you can.

3.  Using either boxes or bags, sort through everything you took off your desk.  Here are some recommended categories:  supplies, equipment, filing materials, paperwork, reference materials, desk accessories, and finally those good ol’ knickknacks.

4.  Make sure to keep a recycling bin near you for all those papers that you find that you don’t need, and then a garbage bin or bag for the rest of the things you find that leave you wondering how they got there.

5.  Make a separate place for everything.  If this means drawing out a little plan on a piece of paper, do it.  There’s a nifty thing called the frequency of use rule, which basically means that you should keep the things you use the most closest too you.  This makes sense now, but if you keep this in mind as you set up, you’ll find that making your desk look perfect, or pretty, or neat, doesn’t exactly make it the most functional, and sometimes, you can sacrifice a bit of neatness for functionality.

6.  Organize the items that you rarely use in bins for easy access when you need them.  This will greatly de-clutter your desk, but also keep things that you might need sometime within an easy reach.

7.  You might want to take a look at the amount of knickknacks you have on your desk.  Having five pictures of your child might be a little overboard, of course, you love them, and why wouldn’t you?  But, one or two is sufficient.

8.  Finally, leave some clear space for writing purposes and just to make it look nice and clean.  It feels good to look down and look down at that wood, or metal of your desk once in a while.
